To avoid generation loss or further degradation from already compressed files, we recommend working from the master, such as a Digital Betacam master, a Pro Res file or 10 bit Animation codec compressed file.

why quality matters

  • dialogue becomes incomprehensible if subtitles enter or disappear at the wrong time.
  • the amount of text in a subtitle must be consistent with the viewers’ reading speed. This usually means editing down the dialogue, while preserving its meaning in full.
  • reflecting the intent of the original material requires translating not just the spoken words but also the cultural references contained in the language. Errors or omissions might affect the viewer’s understanding.
  • poor styling can reduce subtitles readability.
  • sloppy placement of subtitles can distract and frustrate the viewer.
